New York Giants vs Green Bay Packers Spread 2012 NFL Playoff Picks

by Scott Burgess on Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

The Green Bay Packers play host to the New York Giants, Sunday Jan 15th, for a NFC Divisional Round Playoff matchup. The Giants and Packers met in Week 13, with Green Bay winning 38-35. NFL oddsmakers have the Packers as -8 point home favorites over the Giants with the over/under set at 52.5 points. New York (10-7, 5-3 V) ran all over the Atlanta Falcons in a 24-2 home rout in an NFC wild-card game Sunday. QB Eli Manning punctuated his best NFL season by throwing for three touchdowns after completing. Manning carried New York for much of the season, hoping the defense would get stingy, the pass rush would materialize and the running game would get on track. Now, all of that’s happening. The league’s lowest-ranked rushing game ran for a season-high 172 yards, 92 by Brandon Jacobs and 63 by Ahmad Bradshaw. The Giants averaged 5.5 yards per carry, 2 yards more than in the regular season.

The Giants and Packers met earlier in the year, with Eli Manning leading what he thought to be an overtime forcing score, only to see Rodgers and the Packers march down the field and kick the game winning field goal as time expires.  The difference this time around is that the Giants defense is playing much better than the squad that was ranked 27th in yards and 25th in points during the regular season.  The defensive line, which harassed Matt Ryan during the Wildcard game last week, should be able to put pressure on Aaron Rodgers (who hasn’t played a meaningful snap in over two weeks).  We know that it is a good idea to rest your players and avoid injury when heading into the playoffs, but momentum, timing and rhythm shouldn’t underestimated in the NFL, especially come playoff time.

Green Bay (15-1, 8-0 H) was on their bye week after finishing atop the NFC. Next up is the Giants and the Packers defense must be at their best. Even though the Patriots poor defensive play received the most media attention, statistically the Packers defense was worse, a fact that has Eli Manning and his big play receivers chomping at the bit.  Both team’s offenses are capable of putting big points on the board, with the difference being that the Giants are playing noticeably better defensively.  Lambeau Field is a tough place to play, especially come playoff time.

The Packers are going to be a little more creative than the Falcons. The Giants played well but I’m not going to get too excited about them because they haven’t put a string of good games together all year.

The Bottom Line: If the Giants get any kind of lead, their running back duo of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw can tear up big chunks of yardage and significantly shorten the amount of time that Rodgers and the potent Packers offense has to come back.
