New York Giants vs New York Jets Spread 2011 NFL Week 16 Picks

by Scott Burgess on Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

The NY Jets host bitter rivals NY Giants, Saturday Dec 24th, with serious playoff implications. If the Giants beat the Jets and the Cowboys in their final two games, they will win the division. A loss Saturday damages the Jets’ postseason chances. If the Jets win their final two games, they most likely are in the playoffs. NFL oddsmakers have the Jets as -3 point home favorites over the Giants with the over/under set at 45.5 points. NY Giants (7-7, 4-3 V) lost to Washington, 10-23 at home, in Week 15. The loss knocked the Giants out of first place in the NFC East. QB Eli Manning finished 23-of-40 passing for 257 yards, while RB Ahmad Bradshaw scored on a 3-yard run with 33 seconds to play for the Giants’ lone touchdown. The Giants were their own worst enemy.

The big difference in this matchup is that the Jets pass offense is by far the worst unit on the field. Despite the Giants’ 29th ranked pass defense, I think it can hold up against a Jets team that can barely complete a pass of over 10 yards. Mark Sanchez has regressed this season and I’m not so sure the Jets shouldn’t be looking for a QB in the offseason.

NY Jets (8-6, 6-1) got spanked by Philadelphia, 19-45 on the road, in Week 15. The loss snapped New York’s three-game winning streak, dropping the Jets into a tie with the Cincinnati Bengals for the final wild-card spot in the AFC. QB Michael Vick threw for 274 yards and one touchdown, and he also ran for a score in his second game back after missing three with broken ribs. RB LeSean McCoy had 102 rushing yards and surpassed Hall of Famer Steve Van Buren with his 19th touchdown of the season and 16th rushing touchdown.

The Jets haven’t beaten the Giants since 1993. Neither team has showed off any semblance of consistency throughout the season, making this game difficult to predict. Since the Jets have been playing a little bit better as of late, they should have a slight edge, especially if Mark Sanchez can limit costly turnovers. Sanchez has 13 turnovers to Manning’s 15, but Manning has four turnovers in five games, while Sanchez has coughed up two in three.

Recent Trends to Consider:
Giants are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 meetings.
Giants are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 Saturday games.
Giants are 9-2-1 ATS in their last 12 games as a road underdog of 0.5-3.0.
Jets are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing more than 30 points in their previous game.
Jets are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. loss.

The Bottom Line: I think the Giants are still the better team and Manning will rebound with a great pass day.
