The New York Giants head into San Francisco to battle the 49ers, Sunday Jan 22nd, for the NFC Conference Championship game. The Giants lost to the 49ers 20-27, on the road, in Week 10. The Giants are 3-4 against the 49ers in the playoffs. NFL oddsmakers have the 49ers as -2.5 point home favorites over the Giants with the over/under set at 42.5 points. New York (11-7, 6-3 V) shocked the Green Bay Packers 37-20, on the road, in an NFC Divisional Playoff Game on Sunday. QB Eli Manning threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns. Manning found six different receivers against a porous Packers defense. But Manning did the most damage with his throws to WR Hakeem Nicks, who caught seven passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Nicks’ biggest play was a 66-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. His score at the end of the half came on a 37-yard pass into the end zone with defenders all around. The Giants’ defense also was able to defuse the big-play abilities of Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ offense.

The Giants had a plan to beat the Packers — force turnovers, capitalize on them, limit your own mistakes. “We’re a dangerous team,” said Giants coach Tom Coughlin, who defied his critics and maintained his balance on his tightrope-walk of a gig in New York yet again. “I like where we are and how we’re playing.” Defensively, the Giants feature the league’s No. 21-rated road run defense, allowing 129.9 yards per game. San Francisco, meanwhile, ranks No. 13 in rushing offense at home. But, you have to give Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell a lot of credit. His unit gave up only 34 offensive points in the last three games against the Cowboys, Falcons and Packers. Those are the NFL’s 11th, 10th and third-ranked offenses, respectively. In the past four games, the Giants have outscored their opponents 121-50, while opponents have been limited to 22 points in the postseason.

San Francisco (14-3, 8-1 H) got a thrilling 36-32 home playoff victory Saturday over the New Orleans Saints. The 49ers pulled off another last-second win when QB Alex Smith completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to TE Vernon Davis with 9 seconds left.  San Francisco came from behind for five victories during the regular season, four on the road. Davis finished with seven catches for 180 yards. It was the most yards receiving by a tight end in a playoff game. He averaged 25.7 yards per catch. Coach Jim Harbaugh’s NFC West champions proved that a hard-hitting, stingy defense can still win in the modern, wide-open NFL by holding off one of league’s most dynamic offenses.

QB Alex Smith is playing precision football. He had 445 pass attempts this season, and has been picked off a miniscule five times. That 1.1 interception percentage is the fifth-lowest all-time. Offensively, the game matches up San Francisco’s No. 11-ranked offense (23.8 PPG) against a Giants defense that ranks No. 25 at 25 PPG. The 49ers passing attack has averaged 183.1 yards per game, less than the Giants give up through the air (255.1 YPG on average).

The Bottom Line: The Giants are winning on the road and beat out the Super Bowl favs the Packers. The 49ers have home field advantage, but I don’t think they’ll get the offense to match the Giants. NFL Point Spreads Expert Tyler Morgan turned in another successful playoff weekend, posting a 2-1 against the spread record with wins on San Francisco and New York.
