New York Jets vs Miami Dolphins Spread 2011 NFL Week 17 Picks

by Scott Burgess on Thursday, December 29th, 2011

The Miami Dolphins host the New York Jets, Sunday Jan 1st, as the Dolphins look to end the Jets playoff chances. The Jets will need to win and get some help from several other teams to make it in the playoffs. NFL oddsmakers have the Dolphins as -1.5 point home favorites over the Jets with the over/under set at 41 points. New York (8-7, 2-5 V) lost to the NY Giants 14-29, on the road, in Week16. QB Mark Sanchez completed 30 passes on a career-high 59 attempts but put up only 258 yards and was intercepted twice. The Jets were also a brutal 4 for 21 on third-down conversions. The Jets’ playoff hopes took a serious hit. They will need to win at Miami next week and get some help from several other teams to make it in. They have to hope for Cincinnati and Tennessee to lose, and have either Oakland or Denver lose.

The Jets defense didn’t play up to its usual standards this season and the running game was highly inconsistent, had QB Mark Sanchez been more efficient maybe the Jets would be playoff bound. Instead, they’ll look to notch a victory in Miami this weekend and hope for the best when it comes to those other teams losing. The Jets rank 27th in the NFL in total offense and 22nd in rushing offense. They don’t have much more time to fix things. If they lose Sunday, their season is over. Rex Ryan usually does not like to give away his game plan. But he provided a glimpse yesterday of what the Jets are planning for this Sunday against the Dolphins — or more accurately, what they’re not planning. “There’s no way we’re throwing it 60 times,” Ryan said “I don’t see us throwing the ball 60 times ever again. I don’t think any of us could believe that we threw it that many times. I know I couldn’t.”

Miami (5-10, 3-4 H) lost to New England 24-27, on the road, in Week 16. The Fins were up 17-0 at halftime, but then it was all Brady in the second half. The Pats made the necessary adjustments and went to their no-huddle offense more, keeping the Dolphins from making defensive substitutions. Miami lost for the third time in eight games after opening at 0-7 and is 1-1 under Todd Bowles, who took over when Tony Sparano was fired.

The Dolphins continue to fight until the bitter end. QB Matt Moore threw for 294 yards and three touchdowns last week, while Reggie Bush finished with 113 yards on 22 carries. While they have nothing to play for this week as a team, look for Moore and Bush to put on a good show in efforts of landing starting jobs next season. Jason Taylor, the NFL’s active sacks leader, officially announced he would retire after this week. Taylor’s football legacy as an individual is set — sixth all-time in sacks with 139, an NFL-record six fumble returns for touchdowns, nine touchdowns overall.
