NFC East New York Giants last strive to survive by beating RedskinsFedEX Field is home to the hopeless 5-10 Washington Redskins and will be site to the season closer for its team in a last stand situation for the 7-8 New York Giants. The Skins have nothing to play for except pride while the Giants compete to capture a possible wildcard spot in the NFC.

This NFL match up for Saturday night kicks off at 8:00 p.m. (EST) and promises to be a desperate last attempt for the Giants who lost in a 30-7 pounding handed to them by the New Orleans Saints at home last week in New York. The term desperate is not an overstatement since this game could be the end of the line for Coach Tom Coughlin who has been rumored to be under severe questioning by upper management.

The Giants suffered a total collapse Sunday against the Saints, but despite playing as pitifully as they have in years, they could earn a wild card spot in the playoffs if they beat the equally inadequate Redskins on Saturday night.

Eli Manning and the offensive line crumbled under the Saints' defensive and were held to one score in the first quarter, a 55 yard connection between Eli and Plaxico Burress who squirmed upon landing and drove to the end zone. The score seemed to spur the Saints' offensive in stead of intimidating it.

Led by rookie sensation Reggie Bush, the Saints rolled out an array of scores through out the next four quarters while smothering the Giants whose spark was craftily put out by the defense. The Saints recovered two fumbles, picked off Manning once and sacked him twice and held them to no more scores while posting thirty unanswered points to win 30-7.

The Washington Redskins also lost last Sunday in an overtime shoot out against the St. Louis Rams in a game that ended 37-31 with a road loss for Coach Joe Gibbs' team. Washington blew a seven point lead twice in the game and had to tie late in the fourth quarter to take it to overtime.

St. Louis' Steven Jackson wrapped up the game on the second drive in over time when on his third run of the set he rushed for a 21 yard gain to the end zone defeating the Redskins. Washington also lost two veteran star defenders last week, last Friday strong side line backer Marcus Washington was declared out for the season with a sprained knee that will not need surgery but will have to be rested.

During the game with the Rams they lost top corner Shawn Springs with a fractured right shoulder that covered Pro Bowler Torry Holt very well until he was injured in an exchange for possession. He could not finish the game. These injuries end the Skins' chances to play strong on the defense against the pass and the run this weekend.

That and the desperation game before the Giants is why I like the road favorite. The small favorite is laying 2½ and will most likely close at 3 or 3½ if your bookie is smart, so jump on it and buy down if you have to. The total of 42½ is likely to go over, if the Giants can score because Washington can score, they just can't win and since they won't be likely to defend, I like the over.
