OT defeat for Broncos
Jake Plummer led Denver to a 9-6 victory against Kansas City on Jason Elam's 39-yard field goal 5:10 into overtime. Denver's defense hasn't allowed a touchdown in the first two weeks, but the Broncos (1-1) once again struggled on offense until overtime, when Jake Plummer hit Javon Walker for 24 yards to set up Elam's third field goal.
Bill Belichick's teams are known for playing hard until the end. That philosophy has rubbed off on Eric Mangini. The student gave the teacher a scare, but Belichick's New England Patriots held off a late rally by Mangini's New York Jets for a 24-17 victory.
LaDainian Tomlinson ran for two first-half touchdowns and Shawne Merriman led a defense that's starting to take this "Lights Out" thing seriously. Six days after blanking the Oakland Raiders, the Chargers came within 3:09 of back-to-back shutouts for the first time in club history in a 40-7 rout of the Tennessee Titans.
49ers beat Rams
The surprising San Francisco 49ers put on the greater show on turf, making just enough big plays for another win over the St. Louis Rams. Antonio Bryant caught a 72-yard touchdown pass from Alex Smith, and San Francisco's defense stood strong in the final minutes of its second straight home-opening win over its oldest rivals, 20-13 Sunday.
