St.Louis Rams vs Pittsburgh Steelers Spread 2011 NFL Week 16 Predictions

by Scott Burgess on Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

The Pittsburgh Steelers play host to the lowly St.Louis Rams, Saturday Dec 24th, which the Steelers have to win. Pittsburgh and Baltimore are battling it out for the AFC North title, a Steelers loss and a Baltimore win this would week would lock up the division for the Ravens. NFL oddsmakers have the Steelers as whopping -16 point home favorites over the Rams with the over/under set at 37.5 points. St.Louis (2-12, 1-6 V) lost to Cincinnati, 13-20 at home, in Week 15. QB Kellen Clemens was 25-of-36 passing for 229 yards and a late touchdown toss to Danario Alexander for the Rams, who have lost five in a row. The Rams were 2 of 13 on third-down conversions.

The Rams can do nothing but play to knockout the Steelers. They have no pass game or ground game, the only think they have is a pass rush (8th) and I expect the Steelers to run against their league worst rush defense. The Rams have struggled despite entering the season with the label as an up-and-coming team with young starting quarterbacks and playoff aspirations. The Rams have failed to meet expectations and dealt with injuries throughout their roster, leaving the future of coaches Steve Spagnuolo and in doubt as the losses pile up.

Pittsburgh (10-4, 6-1 H) lost badly to San Francisco, 3-20 on the road, in Week 15. They missed a key chance to take sole possession of first place in the AFC North and gain the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed. QB Ben Roethlisberger finished 25 for 44 for 330 yards, but was sacked three times. Roethlisberger, playing on a sprained left ankle that had Big Ben in a walking boot during the week, threw two early interceptions and another in the final minutes. RB Rashard Mendenhall had 15 carries for 64 yards.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is defending his decision to play Ben Roethlisberger on Monday night and declining to divulge whether Roethlisberger will play on Saturday. But all indications are that Roethlisberger’s injured ankle will get a rest. Team officials are privately saying they would be shocked if Roethlisberger plays this week and expect him to rest his injured ankle for at least one week. That would mean Charlie Batch would start in place of Roethlisberger on Saturday, a game the Steelers should be able to win without Roethlisberger.
