Super Bowl XLI MVP: Manning vs Grossman

by Thomas Jensen on Monday, January 29th, 2007

Super Bowl XLI MVP: Manning vs GrossmanWho will be named the MVP of Super Bowl XLI after all the dust clears from Dolphins Stadium in Miami on Sunday? Is it Peyton Manning’s legacy to finally finish a season with an NFL Championship and a Super Bowl MVP honor to go along with it? Is this his year or will it go another way? If you want to put your money on who will win the MVP Award, Bodog.com would like to help.

The mega sportsbook Bodog.com has placed odds on who will win the MVP award and the odds-on favorite player to win is Indianapolis Colt’s quarterback Peyton Manning at +105. If you are new to gambling and need an explanation, it means you will win $105 on a $100 bet.

This is how I see it. For Peyton Manning to be the MVP, the Colts must win the football game. Manning could set every Super Bowl record for a quarterback but if the Colts lose, somebody on the Chicago Bears will be walking off with the MVP award. The same goes for Bears’ quarterback Rex Grossman who is the second most likely person to win the MVP at +550 odds.

To date, 40 Super Bowl’s have been played and in 20 of them, the winning quarterback came away with the MVP award. The other winners were a mixture of half-backs, receivers, defensive backs and one return specialist. The return specialist was Green Bay Packer’s Desmond Howard in the 1997 game.

Some food for thought; the winning quarterback did not win the MVP in the last two Super Bowls played. The award went to receivers Hines Ward of the Steelers in 2006 and to Deion Branch of the Patriots in 2005. With half of the previous awards going to quarterbacks, I would say the position is due.

Of the non-quarterbacks, I would recommend putting some money on Bear’s return specialist Devin Hester at +1900. If Hester can do his magic and return a kick your chances might be pretty good. And it’s not like the Colt’s special teams on kick-off returns are anything to write home about. They gave up over 200 yards in returns to the Patriots in the AFC Championship game. Just think what Hester’s brain is going through right now.

Listed below is a list of a few of the MVP favorites. For the full list you can log on to Bodog.com and look under the heading of Super Bowl player props.
