Vikings and Packers Must Win To Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

by Thomas Jensen on Friday, December 22nd, 2006

The stage is set for the NFC North shootout between the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings tonight (8 p.m. EST) in Green Bay’s historic Lambeau Field. The game presents a must win situation for both teams to have any chance at a playoff berth. The winner stays in the hunt while the loser will be sitting at home watching on television.

Currently the New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons are battling for the final wild-card spot with 7-7 records. The winner of the Packers-Vikings game will need some help to sneak in but must keep winning.

The Vikings will rely on rookie quarterback Tarvaris Jackson to lead them to victory while the Packers look to veteran Brett Favre to guide the Packers. Favre has been a solid starter in Lambeau going 88-29 in his career. After 255 consecutive starts, the old grizzly should be primed to beat up a young cub.

The Packers came away with an ugly 17-9 win against the Lions last week to improve to 6-8 but Favre had to admit there was no way they could win in the playoffs under those conditions.

"We'll take it. But for us to be thinking playoffs, and I heard that there has been playoff talk, we've got a long ways to go," he said. "I'm pleased that we won the game, but if we think we can get into the playoffs playing like that."

Minnesota squandered a good opportunity on Sunday. The team took an early 7-0 lead, but gave up 26 unanswered points before Jackson directed a late scoring drive. He finished 14 of 23 for 177 yards with one touchdown and an interception.

Tonight this quarterback of the future for the Vikings might have a pretty bad welcoming committee. He is replacing a very inconsistent Brad Johnson who has led the Vikings to a slippery slope that they may not be too prepared to trek. I see this game as pretty much a lay up for the old grizzly who has so much of an advantage. At home and in his element the old boy seems pretty much the likely winner.

The Pack is favored -3½ and have a great chance to win and get in the hunt, they might not play well and this game might be a mess that will only go under 37, so give it a try and see what happens.
