Washington Redskins 2006 NFC East PreviewLegendary head coach Joe Gibbs returns for his third season at the helm of the Washington Redskins.  The Redskins improved significantly from 2004 to 2005 ending the season with a 11 – 7 record and a playoff birth.

Veteran Mark Brunell will be the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins in 2006.  Brunell completed 262 passes on 454 attempts for 3,050 yards passing and 23 touchdowns last season.  Brunnell has lost his mobility, but what he lacks in mobility he makes up for in experience.  Brunnell rarely turns the ball over.  The Redskins landed free agent wide receiver Antwaan Randle El from the Pittsburgh Steelers in the off season.  This acquistion will allow Washington to have several three receiver sets with Santana Moss and Brandon Lloyd making up the other two receivers.

Bet on the Washington Redskins to win the NFC East here.

Clinton Portis returns as the starting running back.  Portis was injuried in pre season, but should get back in the line up early enough in the season to rush for over 1,000 yards.  Last season, Portis rushed for 1,516 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Redskins looked to the free agent market to bolster it’s defensive unit.  Gibbs landed defensive lineman Andre Carter from San Francisco.  Carter will be able to get pressure on the quarterback and give the defensive coaches more options and schemes.  Adam Archuleta and Kenny Wright were two additional free agents that signed with Washington and are expected to make an immediate impact.  Gibbs drafted Miami Hurricanes linebacker Roger “Rocky” McIntosh in the first round of the NFL Draft.  Fellow Hurricanes player and starting free safety Sean Taylor should be focused this season since his trial on assault and battery ended over the summer.  The defensive should improve in 2006.
