Odds To Win Masters 2012

by Scott Burgess on Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

The PGA Tour travels to Augusta National this week, Thursday April 5th, for the 2012 Masters, at Augusta National Golf Course in Augusta Georgia. Here are the most recent up to date Odds to win the Masters. Golf oddsmakers have listed Tiger Woods as 9/2 favorite to win the 2012 Masters. Last year’s Masters winner was South Africa’s Charles Schwartzel, who birdied the final four holes for the win. Tiger Woods probably wouldn’t have been as must of a favorite if had he not won at Bay Hill, but now that he’s ended the drought, he no longer has the added burden of trying to get back to the winner’s circle. It’s high time to concentrate on catching Jack. Not to mention his new swing coach Sean Foley has three of his clients, Tiger Woods, Justin Rose and Hunter Mahan, all won PGA Tour events in the past month.

Rory McIlroy has only three real candidates to challenge, himself, Tiger and Phil. In the end, the fact that Rory’s worst finish this year in the U.S. — third — was the clincher. Obviously, his game is made for this course. He just has to battle his mind if he’s on top of the leader board heading into Sunday.

Phil Mickelson the owner of three Green Jackets is always a strong bet, but when he’s not in the top-10 the previous year, he’s an even stronger play. He was T12 in 1998, then T6 in 1999, T24 in 2007, then T5 in 2008. Smells like a fourth Green Jacket to me.

Luke Donald has been great during his last outing, Donald shot up the FedExCup ranks and reclaimed his spot atop the OWGR, winning at Innisbrook. My concern is that he’s never posted a score better than 68 at Augusta, but I’m hoping four good rounds trump one spectacular round.

Lee Westwood was second here in 2010 and has played well in four U.S. starts in 2012.His last two finishes at the Masters have been decent, finishing second in 2010 and T-11 in 2011. In his last 12 Majors he has six Top 10 finishes, but no wins. It could be the same result this year.

SLEEPER PICK: Hunter Mahan just came off a win at the Shell Houston Open, but  I don’t like taking a guy coming off a win because it’s difficult to sustain that momentum, but it’s been done before (see Mickelson, Phil in 2006). Mahan’s game also sets up fairly well for Augusta National and he has a ton of confidence right now.

The Bottom Line: I think with Tiger snapping his losing streak he’ll be even more confident at this prestigious event. When Tiger has pressure and others close to him are playing good, he gets even better. Go Tiger. Want to dominate the books this season with some of the best PGA Picks experts in the business?
