2011 Masters Results: McIlroy Maintains Lead Going Into Third Round

by Matt Foust on Friday, April 8th, 2011

Rory McIlroy maintained his lead at Augusta today, shooting a three under par 69 to follow up his first round score of 65. McIlroy, who was listed at +2000 moneyline odds to win the tournament prior to Thursday's start, is seeking the first major championship of his young career. 2011 Masters Results show several strong contenders within reach of the Irishman, though, including K.J. Choi (-7), Geoff Ogilvy (-6), Y.E. Yang (-5), and Tiger Woods (-7).

McIlroy, who finished 10th in his last PGA Tour event (World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship at Doral), 2011 Masters Results: McIlroy Maintains lead going into Third Roundnavigated the front nine with great success, once again, shooting a three under par 32. McIlroy scored birdies on holes two, three, four and nine yesterday; today he did the same on holes two and nine, but he also finished in three on the par four, 455 yard hole five.

McIlroy, who missed the cut at Augusta last year, has never finished higher than third at a major.

Australian Jason Day currently trails McIlroy by two strokes after finishing the day with an eight under par 64. Day, who is playing in just his third major championship, shot a three under on the front nine, but he really jumped up the leaderboard after a masterful back nine. The 23 year old Beaudesert native birdied holes 11, 13, 14, 16, and 18 to pass everyone in the field except McIlroy.

Tiger Woods (+700 to win the tournament), after hitting a one under 71 yesterday, stormed into contention this afternoon with a blistering back nine that included birdies on holes 10, 13, 14, 15, and 18. Woods, who finished today's round with a 66, now trails McIlroy by just three strokes heading into the weekend.

Today's cut of +1 ended up claiming the likes of Lucas Glover, Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink, Anthony Kim, Graeme McDowell, Vijay Singh, Padraig Harrington, Henrik Stenson, Mike Weir, and Retief Goosen. Phil Mickelson, the favorite to win the Masters at +500 odds, remains alive with a two under par 142.
