Jim Furyk is having a terrific 2009 season, but he has been particularly strong of late. The Pennsylvania native does not have any wins this year; however, he has six top 10 finishes and he has cracked the top five in two of his last three events. Furyk came in second to Tiger Woods in his last outing, The Memorial Tournament at the Muirfield Village Golf Course in Dublin, Ohio.
Furyk, who is currently 12th on the PGA money list, ranks in the top 20 in five of the nine major statistical categories. Most critically, perhaps, in his matchup with Ogilvy is his 13th ranking in driving accuracy. Ogilvy comes in a distant 136th in that department and the rough is no place to be at a course like Bethpage Black.
Furyk, the 2003 US Open winner, has played in 400 career PGA events. He has 13 career wins and 130 top 10 conclusions. He will take a 70.2 2009 scoring average into tomorrow's major.
Geoff Ogilvy, the Tour's top money winner this season, has two wins this year, but he has faded of late. Despite finishing 10th at The Memorial, the Australian's average finish over his last four tournaments is a less than spectacular 30.75.
Ogilvy, who beat Furyk by one stroke to take home the 2006 US Open trophy, has not missed a cut this year and is one of the top putters on the Tour. The 32 year old ranks second this season with an average of 1.710 putts per hole.
The 2009 US Open is scheduled to get underway at 7:00am ET tomorrow morning. The event will be played at the legendary 7505 yard, par 70 Black Course at the Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York. Furyk and Ogilvy, who are grouped will Paul Casey, will tee off from the 10th tee at 7:55am Thursday morning.
