2010 US Open Results: The first round of the 110th U.S. Open did not go according to plan as few of the favorites found themselves near the top of the leaderboard. Day one concluded with a three way tie for first between the world's ninth, 169th, and 200th ranked players. Paul Casey, Brendon de Jonge, and Shaun Micheel all hit the clubhouse with a two under par 69. Tournament favorites Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, both of which were listed at +650 moneyline odds to win the event at online bookmaker SBGglobal.com, are tied for 49th and 68th, respectively.
American Shaun Micheel played a tremendous opening round to follow up his fourth place finish at the St. Jude Classic last
weekend. The Florida native scored a one under par 34 on the front nine after nailing birdies on the par three five hole and the par five six hole. Micheel had three birdies and two bogeys on the par 36 back nine to finish with a 35.
The 41 year old Micheel, whose best finish this season came in Memphis just a few short days ago, is presently 75th on the PGA Tour's moneylist, despite ranking fifth in putts per hole. The Indiana graduate, who did not play at the Masters, has just two top 10 finishes in nine events played this year.
Paul Casey, who was listed at +2800 odds prior to this morning's start, continued his solid Tour play this afternoon with four birdies in the first 18 holes of action. Casey, who hails from England but attended college at Arizona State, has four top 10 finishes in eight PGA events this season. His best showing came at the WGC: Accenture Match in February where he took second. Casey is currenlty 21st on the Tour's money list.
Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge had four bogeys on the back nine at Pebble Beach today, but he overcame his miscues by nailing four birdies and one eagle (580 yard par five 14th). The 29 year old has been busy this year, playing in 18 tournaments; he missed the cut in seven of those, including THE PLAYERS Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but he also has three top 10 finishes.
Tiger Woods failed to score a single birdey this afternoon, but he did produce three bogeys, two of which came in his final three holes of play. Phil Mickelson had a similar day, as he put together three consecutive bogeys to close out the opening round.
