US Open Update: Canadian Mike Weir has surprised the field at Bethpage Black and leads the first round of the 2009 US Open after shooting a 6-under-par 64. Bodog.com betting odds favorite Tiger Woods is not out of it, but the world's top ranked player has some serious groun
d to make up after turning in a first round score of 74 (+4).
Mike Weir, who won the 2003 Masters, got a leg up in his quest for a second major as he dominated the 7426 yard Bethpage Black Course to turn in a remarkable first round score of 64. Weir birdied holes 3, 4, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, and 16 while his lone mistake came when he shot a six on the par 4 six hole.
The Brigham Young graduate, who was listed at 66 to 1 betting odds by Bodog.com prior to today's tee off, has not won an event this year. However, he does have three top 10 finishes, including The Memorial two weekends ago, and he is 23rd on the Tour's 2009 money list with earnings of $1,520,729.
Second on the leaderboard is Peter Hanson of Sweden. Hanson closed out the first round of action with a 4-under-par 66.
Perhaps the most shocking development of the day is American David Duval's third place standing on the leaderboard. Duval, who has missed the cut at nine PGA events this year, shot a 3-under 67 for the day. The Jacksonville native overcame bogies on 11 and 12 by scoring birdies on holes 4, 6, 9, 14, and 17.
Duval, who has 13 career wins, was at one time considered one of the best golfers in the world, but he has not won an event since taking first place at the 2001 British Open.
Crowd favorite Phil Mickelson finished the first round of play with a 1-under-par score of 69. His stellar effort has him tied for seventh in the standings. Mickelson was listed as a 12 to 1 betting odds favorite at Bodog.com to win the 2009 US Open.
US Open Championship odds at Bodog.com have been closed for betting, however, the online bookmaker still has plenty of golf action to wager on.
