2010 US Open Results: Graeme McDowell Wins US Open

by Matt Foust on Sunday, June 20th, 2010

2010 US Open Results: Graeme McDowell, who led the field after two rounds of play at Pebble Beach, secured his first major championship this evening with an even par score of 284 in the 2010 US Open. McDowell, a Northern Ireland native, became the sixth non-American player to win the tournament in the last 10 years. The 30 year old was listed at 11 to 2 odds in Bodog.com's revised US Open Betting Odds this morning; he opened the event at 80 to 1 odds.

Perhaps the best way to describe what McDowell did this weekend would be to say he survived. While others faltered in 2010 US Open Results: Graeme McDowell Wins US Opentoday's final round, McDowell endured. He had his fair share of bogeys this afternoon, four to be exact, but he maintained his poise unlike American Dustin Johnson, who led after three rounds with a six under par 207. The Portrush native never hit back to back bogeys in the final round and he avoided the double bogey which plagued a number of contenders today.

McDowell's final tally of 284 makes him the first Northern Ireland native to capture a US Open title and the first European to do so in 40 years.

The tournament appeared to be in Johnson's hands heading into today's action, but a triple bogey on hole two followed by a double bogey on hole three by the South Carolina product moved McDowell to the top of the leaderboard and he never relinquished his lead. Ernie Els, who finished with a two over par 286, looked as though he might make a move early, but his game faded on the back nine where he had one double bogey and three bogeys.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, who were listed at 3 to 1 and 12 to 1 odds this morning, both fell flat this afternoon as well. Woods opened the day in third place with a one under par 212, but shot a 75 today after hitting bogeys on holes 1, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12. Mickelson hit a 73 today to tie Woods for the tournament at three over par.

Frenchman Gregory Havret, the world's 391st ranked golfer, proved to be McDowell's biggest competition as he finished play with a one over par score of 285.
