2009 British Open Odds: The British Open, the oldest of the four major golf championships, is scheduled to get underway this week at Turnberry in South Ayshire, Scotland. Turnberry's Ailsa, a par 70, 7204 yard course, will serve as home for 137th Open Championship. Play will start at 1:30am ET (6:30am Open time) on Thursday July 16th. Tiger Woods, the world's number ranked golfer, is the favorite to win in BetUS.com's 2009 British Open Odds at +225 on the moneyline.
The British Open returns to Turnberry for the fourth time, as the historic course also served as host for the event in 1977, 1986, and 1994. Nick Price of Zimbabwe won the last Open Championship held at the facility with a final score of 268. American Tom Watson captured the Claret Jug in '77, also with a four day tally of 268, while Greg Norman took it home in '86 with an even par 280.
Padraig Harrington enters this week's proceedings having won the last two British Opens. Harrington, who hails from Dublin, Ireland, won last year at Royal Birkdale Golf Club with a 3-over-par score of 283 and he finished atop the leaderboard in 2007 at Carnoustie Golf Links with a 7-under 277. However, the three-time major winner has suffered through a horrible 2009 season, failing to make the cut in seven of 13 events entered.
Harrington last played at the U.S. Open Championship at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York. He missed the cut there after shooting a 12-over-par 152 through the first two rounds of play.
Tigers Woods, who is coming off his third win of the season and second in his last three tournaments, has won three British Open Championships in his storied career. Woods secured his first Claret Jug in 2000 when he shot a 269 over four days at St. Andrews and he again brought home victories in 2005, also at St. Andrews, and 2006 (Royal Liverpool Golf Club).
Woods, who will be playing for his 15th major title, has won a major every year since 1997, with the exception of 1998, 2003, and 2004. He missed last year's Open Championship while recovering from knee surgery. The 33 year old Stanford product took sixth at both The Masters and the U.S. Open earlier this season.
