2009 British Open Picks: Tiger Woods enters this week's British Open as the prohibitive favorite. Online bookmaker Sportsbook.com has the 14 time major winner listed as a +200 moneyline favorite in their 2009 British Open Picks. The next closest competitors are Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter, both coming in at +2000 odds. Play is set to begin at 6:30am (Open time) on Thursday, July 16th at Turnberry in South Ayrshire, Scotland. Tiger Woods arrives in Scotland with a lot of positive golf momentum. The world's number one player is fresh off a win at the AT&T National, where he shot a 267 (-13) at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland and he has won two of the last three events he has entered. The 33 year old Woods also took the top spot at The Memorial tournament in Dublin, Ohio prior to a sixth place finish at the U.S. Open. Woods, who has never played at Turnberry, has participated in nine PGA events this season. Any ill effects from his knee injury and subsequent surgery are clearly gone as he is currently first in PGA Tour scoring average at 68.28 and tops on the money list with a total of $4,560,163. Tiger, however, has not been in top form at the season's first two majors, but still finished a highly respectable sixth at both The Masters and the U.S. Open. His last major win came at Torrey Pines in San Diego when he won the 2008 U.S. Open in a dramatic playoff with Rocco Mediate. He is hoping for a similar performance at Turnberry, but acknowledged after a practice round this weekend that is will not be an easy task. "This course is a lot more difficult than people are letting on," said the 2009 British Open Picks favorite. "You've just got to do your homework." Two-time British Open winner and defending Open champion, Padraig Harrington, is another favorite this week, coming in at +2500 odds. Harrington's favored status is somewhat of a surprise given his miserable performance this season. The three time major winner has missed the cut in four of the last five events he has entered, including last month's U.S. Open in New York. Sergio Garcia, who has never won a golf major, finished 51st at Royal Birkdale last year after entering the event as the favorite. He too has suffered through a difficult year, recording just one top 10 finish in 10 PGA events played. Tiger Woods is scheduled to tee off at 4:09am ET (9:09am Open time) on Thursday. Garcia will hit the links at 2:58am ET, while Harrington begins at 9:20am ET. Sportsbook.com 2009 British Open Picks: Tiger Woods +200 |
