Ernie Els is having his best season in years with his two wins in 2010, after a two year drought. He won the 2010 World Golf Championships-CA Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill two weeks later. Ernie continued his 2010 success with a T3 at the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. He’s currently first in the FedEx Cup Standings and he ranks 1st in scoring average on the PGA TOUR. He's also second on the European Tour's money list, and is sixth in the world golf rankings. Els won the 2002 British Open, at Muirfield, as he sets his mind on a second Open Championship. Els has loved St. Andrews since he first played it at 17. This is his fourth British Open on the Old Course, where experience can be as big a factor as talent. "I think I still have a decent chance of playing well here this week and maybe having a chance," Els said. "If I can get into position like I was at the U.S. Open Championship, I'd like to finish it off."
Lee Westwood British Open hopes take a nosedive. The World number three and European number one first felt pain in his lower leg at the French Open two weeks ago when he was whisked off to hospital as a precautionary measure. Since then he has hardly hit any balls, spending his time "on the putting green and wandering around and doing a bit of chipping". He admits that his chances of finally winning a major at St. Andrews are not good. The injury is a blow to the Englishman, who has been arguably the best golfer in the world over the last 12 months, which saw him post top-three finishes in three of the last four majors and rise to a career-best third in the world rankings. On top of that, he is eager to erase the memory of last year's Open at Turnberry, when he bogeyed three of the last four holes to squander a winning position.
