2009 British Open Odds: The 138th British Open is set to begin early tomorrow morning at the Turnberry Resort's Ailsa Course in Ayrshire, Scotland. Ernie Els, who won the Open Championship in 2002, is one of the favorites to take home the Claret Jug this weekend. Ernie Els, who at one time was considered one of the top three golfers in the world, has not had much go his way in recent years. The Johannesburg native is currently ranked 24th in the World Golf Rankings and he is just 57th on the PGA Tour's money list with a tally of $949,110.
Els has entered 12 PGA events this season; he has no wins, but has placed insde the top 10 three times. The 39 year old took sixth place at the Mercedes-Benz Championship in January with a four a four day total of 227 and he finished fifth at the WGC: Accenture Match. Els also shot a 15-under par 283 at The Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio in June.
Els has missed two cuts this season, which happened to be the year's first two majors. The U.S. Open was the veteran golfer's last event; he recorded a first round score of 78 and was just one stroke better in the second round, leading to his early dismissal.
Els, who has 16 wins to his credit, has notched just one win in the last five years. Three of his 16 career wins have come in major events. The South African won the U.S. Open in 1994 and 1997, and the aforementioned Open Championship in 2002. Els has finished inside the top 10 twenty-eight times at a major, but he has also missed the cut 11 times.
Els is set to tee off at 7:58am ET, he is grouped with Lucas Glover and Martin Kaymer.
