2010 British Open Results: The 139th British Open got underway today and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy stormed his way to the top of the leaderboard with a nine under par 63. South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen finished the day in second place after posting a 65 through the first 18 holes at the Old Course at St. Andrews. The favorite to win the tournament at Sportsbook.com, Tiger Woods, is currently tied for eighth after shooting a five under par 67.
Rory McIlroy presently ranks 32nd on the PGA Tour's moneylist and he has missed four cuts in his last seven tournaments;
however, none of that slowed the Irishman today. McIlroy scored a birdie on the front nine on hole three and setup a tremendous run on the back nine with an eagle on the par four ninth. The 21 year old went on to hit six more birdies to give him a two stroke lead after the first round of action.
Following McIlroy are surprise contenders Louis Oosthuizen and Andrew Coltart. Oosthuizen, who missed the cut at the Masters and the U.S. Open, currently ranks 32nd in the European Tour's Race to Dubai standings. His average finish in six events this year is a lackluster 77.2, but the South African found his game today, hitting birdies on holes 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, and 15 to finish at seven under.
Coltart, who hails from Edinburgh, Scotland, is 408th in the Official World Golf Rankings and 151st in the Race to Dubai. The Scotsman played beyond his stature this afternoon, by shooting a six under par 66. The solid round has him tied for third with former British Open champ John Daly, Steven Tiley, Bradley Dredge, and Peter Hanson.
Tiger Woods, who has dominated the last two Open Championships at St. Andrews, got off to a good start today by scoring birdies on holes 2, 7, 9, 12, 13, and 14. The three time British Open champion and 14 time major winner's lone hiccup came when he shot a five on the far four 17th.
Phil Mickelson, who was listed at +1500 odds prior to today's start, closed out the day tied for 96th with a one over par 73.
