Last year Sergio Garcia narrowly missed winning his first major championship when Padraig Harrington bested him in a playoff at the 136th Open Championship. Garcia, one of the biggest names and best players in the sport, will attempt to garner his eighth professional win this weekend at the Royal Birkdale in Southport, England. The Spaniard is favored to win the British Open at 8/1 odds (BodogLife.com). Garcia, known for his flair and charisma while on the golf course, currently sits at the 10th spot on the 2008 money list. He possesses a 71.2 scoring average and has two top 10 finishes in 12 events. Despite a relatively good year -- at least money wise -- 2008 has marked a continuation of Garcia's struggles in major championships. He missed the cut at the Master's this season and he finished a distant 18th at the U.S. Open last month. Odds makers, however, feel that Garcia's game is well suited for the challenges that Royal Birkdale presents. Garcia, who won The Players Championship earlier this year at the TPC at Sawgrass, is vowing that this year's Open will be his first major win. Whether it is his confidence or abilities, he has earned the status as Bodog's favorite to take home the claret jug. BodogLife.com has paired Garcia with Ernie Els in its Head-toHead odds and lists him at -130 odds while giving Els even odds. Els, along with Lee Westwood, is the online sportbook's second favorite to win the Open at 14/1 odds.
