2009 British Open Results: The first round of action has ended at the Turnberry Resort in Ayrshire, Scotland and Spaniard Miguel Jimenez is atop the leaderboard with a 6-under par first day score of 64. Despite Jimenez strong opening round, online bookmaker Bodog.com still has Tiger Woods listed as the favorite to win the 138th Open Championship in their revised 2009 British Open Odds. Miguel Jimenez, who has never won a major, has 15 career European Tour wins on his resume. The 45 year old missed the cut at last year's Open Championship, and he secured his best finish at the event in 2001 when he tied for third. The Malaga native was nearly flawless today, scoring birdies on holes 2, 6, 7, 9, 17, and 18. The biggest surprise of the day, however, was the performance of 59 year old Tom Watson. The Kansas City, Missouri native shot a 5-under par 65 to put him in a three way tie for second place. Watson is not unfamiliar with success at the British Open or the Ailsa Course. The eight time major winner has won the Open Championship five times and he took the Claret Jug at Turnberry in 1977. Watson's blast from the past included birdies on 1, 3, 10, 12, and 17. Watson can be had at 100 to 1 betting odds right now at Bodog.com. Another American and former British Open winner, John Daly, also stunned many with his stellar finish this afternoon. The 43 year old Arkansas product, who has been known more for his drinking habits of late than his play on the golf course, is tied for 21st after producing a 2-under par 68. Daly had four bogeys, but made up for them with birdies on 3, 4, 12, and 17 and an eagle on the par 5 seventh hole (538 yards). Tiger Woods, like his showing in last month's U.S. Open, did not have a great opening day. The 14 time major winner, who is seeking his first major championship this season, had bogeys on 3, 10, 15, and 16, but countered with birdies on 2, 7, and 11 to finish with a 1-over par 71. He is currently tied for 68th. Other notables who had solid outings today include Ben Curtis (-5), Steve Stricker (-4), Camilo Villegas (-4), Stewart Cink (-4), Jim Furyk (-3), Vijay Singh (-3), Retief Goosen (-3), and Ernie Els (-1).
