2010 British Open Results: Oosthuizen Wins Claret Jug

2010 British Open Results: Louis who? That will no longer be the question after South African Louis Oosthuizen completed his improbable British Open winning turn at St. Andrews this afternoon. The Pinnacle Point resident, who turned pro in 2003, took home a major victory with just his second career win, finishing at 16 under par for the tournament. Oosthuizen was a mere afterthought of an afterthought when the Open Championship got underway on Thursday, but he was a -150 moneyline favorite to win the event at BetUS.com going into today's final round of play.

Prior to today's British Open win, Louis Oosthuizen had recorded just one victory his entire career and that came earlier this 2010 British Open Resultsyear at the Open de Andallicia de Golf where he finished 17 under par. That victory capped a solid stretch of golf for the 27 year old where, dating back to December 20th of last year, he had posted an average finish of 13.2.

However, Oosthuizen had faded heading into the 139th Open Championship, placing an average of 77.1 in the seven tournaments he participated in preceding it while missing the cut at both the Masters and U.S. Open. That downslide came to an abrupt stop this weekend at the Old Course where Oosthuizen posted 20 birdies and one eagle to just six bogies.

Oosthuizen had created a nice cushion for himself heading into today's final round with the nearest competitor, England's Paul Casey, still three strokes back. Oosthuizen did not falter in the face of the historic pressure either as he closed out the day with a one under par 71 to win the Claret Jug by seven strokes.

Paul Casey, who was paired with Oosthuizen this afternoon, finished the fourth round with a three over par 75, but  he tied for third overall with Henrik Stenson and Rory McIlroy at eight under for the tournament.

Second place belonged to Lee Westwood as the Worksop, England native completed play at nine under par. The solid finish marked Westwood's fourth top three finish in the last five majors.

Tiger Woods, the favorite to win the tournament, shot an even par 72 this afternoon and tied for 23rd overall with three other players, including 2010 U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell, at three under par for the event.
