Thursday, August 7th marks the beginning of the 90th PGA Championship and, aside from the Ryder Cup, the last major golfing event of the season. This year's tournament will take place at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Michigan. It will be the third time that the 7395 yards "Monster" has hosted the PGA Championship and the tenth time that it has hosted a major championship. The par 70 course is widely regarded as one of the toughest courses in all of golf and the winner of this event will have no doubt had his mettle tested come Sunday. Like the British Open, the field is absent of an injured Tiger Woods, leaving a plethora of candidates as potential winners. The early betting favorite at online sports book Bodoglife.com is none other than Phil Mickelson at 9/1 odds. Mickelson is a three time major winner and he won the PGA Championship back in 2005. He is currently number three on the money list at $4,344,985 and a first place share of the Championship's $7,000,000 purse would pad that number nicely. He has been somewhat inconsistent this season; if he hasn't been in the top five then he's usually finished in the low to mid 20's. Mickelson will share the travails of a lengthier Oakland Hills, which also features more hazards since the last PGA event held there, with the likes of Sergio Garcia, Ernie Els, and Vijay Singh. Garcia, who was the favorite to win the British Open, is listed at 18/1 odds to win this event, as is British Open winner Padraig Harrington. Vijay Singh, fresh off his win at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational is also getting 18/1 odds. Rounding out Bodoglife.com's top 10 favorites is: Jim Furyk 20/1, Lee Westwood 22/1, Anthony Kim 22/1, Retief Goosen 25/1, Adam Scott 28/1, and Ernie Els 28/1. Bodoglife.com also featured some intriguing head-to-head betting odds. Opening day pairs include: Phil Mickelson -150 vs. Sergio Garcia +120 Jim Furyk -155 vs. Vijay Singh -115 Ernie Els -105 vs. Anthony Kim -125 Padraig Harrington -115 vs. Sergio Garcia -115 |
