2010 PGA Championship Results: The 92nd PGA Championship ended in a three hole aggregate playoff this afternoon with Germany's Martin Kaymer winning his first career major title. Kaymer, who was tied for third after yesterday's third round, finished 11 under for the tournament and one stroke ahead of Bubba Watson in the playoff showdown. Kaymer was listed at 40 to 1 betting odds at online bookmaker Bodog.com prior to Thursday's start.
Twenty-five year old Martin Kaymer, the 13th ranked golfer in the world, wrapped up his first major championship after
finishing even par through a three hole playoff with Bubba Watson. Kaymer parred the 10th, birdied the 17th, and bogeyed the 18th while Watson hit a birdie on the 10th, par on the 17th, and a double bogey on the 18th.
Kaymer deftly laid up on the 18th after watching Watson hit into the hazard on his second shot. His decision paid huge dividends, despite what amounted to an extra stroke, as he left himself a 14 foot putt to win the tournament on his third shot. Kaymer two putted the hole but still finished one shot ahead of Watson thanks to the latter's penalty stroke.
The win was the first of the season for the Dusseldorf native, who presently ranks eighth in the European Tour's Race to Dubai standings.
Fourth place finisher Dustin Johnson must have gone through the gamut of emotions on the final hole where he appeared to have a 10 foot put for par that would have given him his first major championship. Johnson missed the putt to drop him to 11 under for the tournament (or so he thought), placing him in a three way playoff with Kaymer and Watson. Johnson, however, was penalized two strokes for grounding his club in a fairway bunker on his approach shot, which ended his day in a most unusually agonizing fashion.
The favorites to win the PGA Championship, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, tied for 28th and 12th, respectively. Woods shot a one over par 73 to finish two under for the tournament while Mickelson hit a five under par 67 this afternoon, bringing his four day tally to an impressive 282 (-6).
