2009 PGA Championship Results: Y.E. Yang beat the odds and the world's greatest golfer, Tiger Woods, on Sunday to become the first Asian born player to win a major golf championship. Yang, who trailed Woods by two strokes entering today's final 18 holes, finished with an 8-under par 280 at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota to win the 91st PGA Championship. Woods closed out play with a 3-over par 75 on the final 18 after leading with a score of 8-under through the first 54 holes of action. Yang, who entered this weekend's tournament with just one PGA win to his credit, was a stroke behind Tiger Woods at the turn after scoring a birdie on the third hole and a bogey on the fifth. Yang did not fade in the face of mounting pressure on the back nine as Woods kept himself in it, despite playing in a more conservative manner than fans are accustomed. Yang flipped the the odds in his favor, though, and put the heat on Woods on the 14th hole with an amazing chip from the edge of the green that found its way to the hole. The eagle gave the South Korean a one shot advantage after Woods followed up with a birdie. Yang continued to hold up well, but he left the door open for Tiger on the 17th after Woods overshot the green and two putted for a bogey. The 37 year old Yang took three putts to find the hole, taking a one stroke lead into the par four 18th instead of a nearly insurmountable two shot advantage. Yang placed a solid drive down the left edge of the fairway on the 18th, but left himself with a difficult path to the flag. Woods landed on the right edge about 10 yards past Yang. The Jeju-do native then made history and all but secured the win with an incredible second shot that landed just short and to the right of the hole, taking away any chance Woods had to rally. He went on to birdie while Tiger scored his fifth bogey of the afternoon. 2009 PGA Championship Results: Yang -8 |
