Carnoustie, possibly the most difficult venue in golf, last hosted The Open Championship in 1999, the tournament best remembered for Frenchman Jean Van de Velde’s epic collapse. He only needed a double bogey in order to win but triple bogeyed forcing a playoff with Paul Lawrie and 1997 champion Justin Leonard. Lawrie won the playoff and the championship. Woods finished seventh in that event. It was one year ago when Woods won at Hoylake, an emotional win being his first major championship following the death of his father Earl. Family takes center stage again this year as it will be Woods’ first major entry since the birth of his daughter Sam Alexis. Woods has only played once since his her birth. Challenger Phil Mickelson, never a contender in the Open, seems to be in good form and is expected to play well following his playoff loss at Loch Lomond last week. Several players from the PGA Tour competed at Loch Lomond in order to prepare for this week’s Open Championship.
