Tiger Woods baby news great for Open backersGolf gamblers who were planning to back Tiger Woods for the next month's Open at Carnoustie were handed some great news when his wife Elin gave birth to their first child a few weeks earlier than was anticipated. Woods is rated at 5 to 2 odds to win the 2007 Open Championship with Bodog.com.

Tiger was a doubtful runner for the third Major of the season, the world No. 1 having made it clear he would put the arrival of his offspring ahead of his quest for a fourth Claret Jug.

But Point-Spreads.com believes Woods now has enough time to get use to being a father to daughter Sam Alexis before flying to Scotland in the middle of July.

The 12-time Major champion is no bigger than 11 to 4 golf betting odds for Open glory and the one inspired Paddy Power punter who correctly predicted Sam as the name of Tiger's baby may choose to play up his winnings.

Power spokesman Darren Haines said: “We laid only one bet on Sam – a fiver at 50-1 a couple of months ago – and we are just relieved the Earl backers didn't take us to the cleaners.”

Earl, which was the name of Tiger's father, who died last year, was the 3 to 1 favourite when the firm started betting on the name of the baby.

Ladbrokes make Sam Woods 2,500-1 to win an LPGA Major and the same price to become world No. 1 in the women's game. Sam is 50-1 to appear at some point on the LPGA tour and 500-1 to win a regular LPGA event.

Tiger said: “Both Elin and Sam are doing well and resting peacefully. This is truly a special time in our lives.”

Woods is scheduled to host a new US Tour event, the AT&T National, in Washington DC, on July 5th, 2007. He had indicated that he would be prepared to miss the Open at Carnoustie should the birth coincide with the tournament, so this is great news for anyone looking to back him.
