Tiger Woods dominated on Sunday to win the 88th PGA Championship played at Medinah Country Club. Tiger shot 68 in his final round to end the tournament at -18. Woods has twelve career major titles with the win at Medinah, second most all time. All the golfers were decked to the nines today as they tee’d off at Medinah Country Club for the final round of the 2006 PGA Championship Title. Tiger Woods was wearing his traditional Sunday colors of red and black. Sergio Garcia was sporting a throw back Spanish soccer jersey with yellow pants. Sergio was four strokes behind the leaders at -10 to start his day, perhaps that is why he chose to wear such a dramatic outfit. Garcia had to play an aggressive final round to have a chance at the 2006 PGA Championship Title. Luke Donald from England was wearing red and white, the same color as his countries soccer team.
Mike Wier was in all black signifying his hopes to serve as the executioner. Wier started the day 2 behind the leaders at -12.
Woods has never lost once he had the lead going into the final round in a major. That held true today. Woods birdied the first hole and then shot par through the fourth. On the same hole, Luke Donald drove the ball 190 yards from the green but had a bad lie in a divit. His second shot landed to the left of the pin just off the green. His chip shoot was decent but he missed the par putt for a bogey and slipping to -13 two behind Woods.
Donald and Woods each birdied on the fifth giving Tiger a 2 stroke lead at -16.
Tiger looked focused and methodical as he birdied a 30 foot putt on the 8th hole for a 4 stroke lead at -18. Luke Donald shot par on the 8th hole. Sergio birdied the 9th to go -11 for the tournament. Tiger shot par on the 9th hole to take his 4 stroke lead into the back nine in the 2006 PGA Championship.
Sergio was in the trees on the 10th hole and tried to punch it out, instead the ball went in the ruff. On his 3rd shot out of the ruff, he hit the ball to the left of the pin. He chipped his fourth shot 2 feet from the cup and putted in to save par. Sergio stays at -11.
Tiger Woods hits the ball in the ruff on his tee shot. This hole has been giving Woods trouble all week. Woods hit his second shot back into the fairway and his third shot put him in position for a 10 foot birdie putt. He ended up ringing the cup and putting in for par.
Luke Donald hits his tee shot dead center on the 10th hole with a clear shot at getting the ball on the green in two strokes. Luke hit his second shot just short of a sand trap in the ruff. Donald hit the chip shot over the green in the ruff.
Mike Wier hit his second shot well right of the pin into the ruff leaving himself with a difficult chip shot on the 11th hole. Wier chipped the ball onto the green and then two putted for a birdie. Tiger drove the ball to the right of the fairway on his first shot 180 yards from the green on the 11th hole. He hit the second shot about 10 feet from the pin on the green with an 8 iron.
Tiger Woods had a monster drive on the 14th hole par 5. Woods has been killing the par fives all week at Medinah. Tiger hit his second shot into the trees to the right of the fairway making his approach difficult. He was able to get it out of the trees and reached the green. He missed his birdie putt but tapped in for a par. Mike Wier hit it out of the bunker on his 4th shot. Wier has a 5 foot putt for par.
Shaun Michell hit his 6 iron on the par three 17th hole and stuck the ball about 25 feet from the pin. Michell two putted to par the hole. Mike Wier reached the left side of the green with his 6 iron. Wier had a 25 foot for birdie putt from the fringe but missed it wide for a 5 foot par putt. Mike pushed the putt and ended up with a bogey. Tiger Woods hit his 6 iron well over the hole and into the back bunker. Luckily for Tiger, the ball rolled down to the flat part of the sand trap. Woods chipped the ball 6 feet short of the pin. He missed the par putt and finished with a bogey. Shaun Michell hung it well into the right side of the fairway deep into the forest on the 19th hole. Sergio missed a putt that would have given him a share of the second place purse. Tiger Woods came up short on a birdie putt on the 18th but eventually par putted to win the 2006 PGA Championship Title. |
