Journeyman Woody Austin shot a final-round eight-under-par 62 and breezed to a five-shot victory in real style at the St Jude Championship. After securing his entry into the US Open 2007, BetUS.com listed Austin at +15,000 (Bet $100 to win $15,000) golf betting odds to win the major at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania from June 14th – 17th, 2007.Winning for the first time since the Buick Championship in 2004, the 43-year-old hardly put a foot wrong as he easily overcame third-round leader Adam Scott – who could only manage a 75 to finish in seventh. Austin was a 200/1 long shot with several bookmakers going into the St. Jude Championship tournament. After starting the tournament with a two-over 72 in his opening, Austin finished at 13-under 267. It was his third career victory and marked the lowest final round by a tournament champion this year. "I never thought I would have that (kind of lead) because my three or four wins were all playoffs, so for me to actually be able to finish a tournament off, knowing I won instead of never knowing, I didn't know if I would ever get there," Austin said. Tiger Woods missed the event in preparation for next week's US Open at Oakmont. Woods is the favorite at +250 to win his first major tournament in 2007.
England's Brian Davis posted his best finish on the PGA Tour with second place in Memphis. Davis, who has missed six cuts this season, shot four birdies in a great round of 66 to end on eight under, five strokes behind Austin.Davis's performance was all the more remarkable considering the week he has had, with his wife and two young children rushed to hospital on Tuesday after carbon monoxide gas leak in their Orlando house.
