Zach Johnson Wins Masters, Tiger Woods Breaks Club

by Thomas Jensen on Monday, April 9th, 2007

Zach Johnson Wins Masters, Tiger Woods Breaks ClubZach Johnson shot 3 under par 69 in his final round to win the 2007 Masters Championship Title at +1, holding off a inconsistent Tiger Woods. Woods was poised to win his 5th green jacket title going into Easter Sunday's final round at Augusta National Golf Club. Johnson remained focus down the stretch and Woods fell apart proving he is still human.

Woods ended the day tied with Retief Goosen and Rory Sabbatini at +3 for second place. "It was hard," Woods said. "He played beautifully. With the hard and fast conditions, it certainly made it a little easier for him."

The 31 year old Johnson won his first major title with the highest winning score in 51 years. Johnson's only PGA Tour win came at the 2004 BellSouth Classic in Atlanta. Bodog.com has Zach Johnson at 125 to 1 long shot to win the 2007 British Open Championship in July.

“My goal is to maintain my focus,” Johnson said. “Maintain an even keel. I played my own game. I never got down. I felt comfortable with the putter and confident with what I was doing.”

Johnson was the money leader on the 2001 Hooters professional tour and has spent four years on minor professional tours.

Augusta National was a tough course for all the professional golfers this week. Tiger Woods even broke a club on a pine tree. The average round score was 77, compared to last year's average round of 73.

"This was the hardest Masters I think I've ever seen," stated Woods. "I'm glad I was wearing metal spikes or I would have slipped on these greens, they were so fast."

Last year's Masters Champion Phil Mickelson continued to struggle in major championships. Since Winged Foot, Mickelson has finished tied for 22nd (British Open), tied for 16th (PGA Championship) and Sunday's 24th.
