NHL Picks: New York Islanders vs Edmonton Oilers

NHL Picks: New York Islanders vs Edmonton OilersThe New York Islanders play their second game of a long five game road trip of NHL Picks as they take on the Edmonton Oilers.  The Islanders are coming off a season last year that certainly had the league talking as they pulled off a huge trade to acquire Ryan Smyth who was Edmonton's heart and soul late in the season. That move propelled them into the playoffs where they lost to a much better Buffalo team in the first round.  This season the Islanders have shown respectability as they are 20-16-0-4 but are going into this one with a two game losing streak.  The Islanders went into this season with a whole new number one line and it has showed thus far as they rank only 25th in scoring averaging 2.42 goals per game.  Their defense has performed in the middle of the pack ranking 13th in the league.  Tonight BetUS.com has the Islanders listed as a small +105 underdog on the money line and +1.5/-250 on the puck line.

For the second year in a row the Edmonton Oilers look to get back to their Stanley Cup success of two seasons ago.  After struggling last year thus far this season doesn’t appear to have gotten much better.  Thus far the Oilers are only 18-21-0-4 and rank 26th in total points.  Their main issues of failing to have an effective offensive attack seemed to have carried over into this season thus far as they rank dead last in scoring averaging only 2.33 goals per game.  Their defense hasn’t been much help either as they give up an average of 3.00 goals per game good for a 24th ranking.  Edmonton has won two of their last three games and to continue the winning they will have to get off to a fast start as they win only 27% of their games when trailing after the first period.

Home ice doesn’t appear to be that much of an advantage when coming off a previous home game for the Oilers as they are only 20-41 ATS after playing a home game over the last 2 seasons.  But that disadvantage could be mitigated tonight as the Oilers are11-8 ATS when playing their 4th game in 7 days this season.
