NHL Picks: Pittsburgh Penguins vs Florida Panthers

by Alexander Banks on Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

The Pittsburgh Penguins face off in NHL Picks action tonight when they travel South to take on the Florida Panthers.  The Penguins come into this one red hot as they have won six in a row heading into tonight.  Their recent streak has them at 23-16-0-2 on the season putting them tied for 9th in the NHL in total points with Montreal and Minnesota.  With scoring phenom  Sidney Crosby the Penguins have sufficient scoring power and currently rank 16th scoring an average of 2.78 goals per game.  One of the issues that hurt Pittsburgh last season was that they couldn’t win faceoff’s as they ranked a lowly 26th in percentage won.  This year has been a different story however as they have improved their position to 17th winning 49.5% of their faceoff’s.  Pittsburgh’s defense has been good and has been very effective protecting a lead as they have won 94% of their games when leading after two periods.  BetUs.com has Pittsburgh listed as a small +110 road underdog on the money line and +1.5/-260 on the puck line.

After a three game winning streak last month the Florida Panthers have really struggled recently as they are coming off a loss in their last game and have now lost 5 of their last seven.  The recent swoon has dropped the Panthers to 19-20-0-3 overall and 26th in total points.  Much of their problems this season can be attributed to their lack of offense.  The Panthers worked hard in the off season to improve in this department but it has only yielded a 26th ranking in scoring thus far.  Florida has been very respectable on defense as they rank 12th in goals against average and 17th in penalty killing percentage.  It will be especially important for them to get off to a good start as they have been horrible when trailing after the first period winning only 22.7% of their games in that situation.

Florida has shown the ability to bounce back from losing streaks over the past couple of seasons as they are 14-9 ATS after failing to cover 4 of their last 5 against the spread over the last 2 seasons.  However, Pittsburgh has been tough when hitting the road after a home game as they are 7-2 ATS in road games after playing a home game this season.

Michael Alexander is coming off another winner on the ice and is locked and loaded with more GUARANTEED  selections at Alexandersports.
