2008 Stanley Cup Betting Odds

by Thomas Jensen on Monday, January 28th, 2008

Point-Spreads.com has decided to break down the top three teams at the midway point of the NFL season to give help to bettors looking to make early NHL picks and NHL future bets. The three teams listed below are the favorites to win the 2008 Stanley Cup.

Detroit Red Wings (35-10-4) are listed as the 4 to 1 odds favorite to win the 2008 Stanley Cup at Sportsbook.com.  At the halfway point, Hockey town USA reigns atop the list of who is the best team in the NHL. The Red Wings are stacked from head to toe in both offense and defense. They are led by Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk up front and have a solid core of grinders and checkers with tons of playoffs experience which is invaluable to a team. Daniel Cleary, Aaron Downey, Dallas Drake, Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby are savvy grinders that play within the system.

On defense, the Wings are led by their future hall of famer and perennial Norris trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom and Chris Chelios. Chelios is 46 and still plays like a 20 year old. In the backend the Wings are solid with Dominik Hasek and Chris Osgood.  Right now the Detroit Red Wings are head and tails the class of the NHL.

Ottawa Senators (30-14-4) are listed at 6 to 1 odds to win the 2008 Stanley Cup at Sportsbook.com.  The Ottawa Senators started the season on fire but have cooled down in the second third of the season. There is little doubt that the Senators can score as their top three players Daniel Alfredsson, Dany Heatley, and Jason Spezza are among the best in the league.

By the time the playoff come, the Ottawa Senators will be injury free and looking to make a run for the cup. Now that the team has overcome their prior playoff defeats they now know how to win in the playoffs; which is key.  The Senators still need to solve their goaltender issues.

Philadelphia Flyers (26-15-5) are listed at 10 to 1 odds to win the 2008 Stanley Cup at Sportsbook.com. The Philadelphia Flyers also had a slow start to the year but near the end of the halfway point they have started to gel and play like the team everyone thought they would be. Free agent signings Daniel Briere, Joffrey Lupul and Scott Hartnell are starting to play within the system. Jeff Carter, R.J. Umberger and Mike Richards are now playing to their potential and with Simon Gagne back from injury; the Flyers have a lot of depth.

Philly has never had a great net minder but Antero Niittymaki seems to be the real thing. If he can live up to his potential, the Flyers will go far in the playoffs. Defense still has some issues as they are too big and slow to handle the speedy wingers.
