After a great 2005 campaign of NHL Picks the Carolina Hurricanes sunk below the .500 mark last season and, at least up to this point in the season, have not done much better as they come in at 26-26-0-4 thus far. Their offense has been more potent than the Capitals this season as they rank 6th in the league scoring an average of 2.93 goals per game. Their defense has been slightly worse than Washington this season as they rank a dismal 26th while giving up an average of 3.16 goals per game. If Carolina can grab the lead early and come out of the first period in front the odds show that they have won 75% of their games this season when that has occurred. BetOnline.com has Carolina listed as +125 underdogs on the money line and +1.5/-235 on the Puck line.
The Washington Capitals were hoping to turn things around this season as last years NHL Picks hopes turned into a disaster when they completely fell apart down the stretch winning only four of their final 20 games. However, thus far on the season it hasn’t seemed to have gotten all that better as they sit at 26-24-0-5. They have seemed to have heated up lately as they have won eight of their last eleven contests. Some of their recent success can be attributed to their improvements on offense as they now rank 8th in the NHL at 2.87 goals per game after ranking 20th earlier in the year. They attempted to bolster up their defense with off season acquisitions of defensemen Josef Boumedienne Tom Poti. But that hasn’t seem to pan out either as they sit 25th giving up an average of 3.09 goals per game.
Carolina comes into this one off a tough 1-0 loss the other night and that could put things in their favor tonight as they are an impressive16-7 ATS (+7.4 Units) after a close loss by 1 goal in their previous game over the last 2 seasons. However, don’t count out the Washington Capitals as they come in off a two game winning streak and are a very profitable 11-5 ATS (+5.5 Units) second half of the season this season.
