NHL Picks: Boston Bruins vs Pittsburgh Penguins PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 13 February 2008

Tonight in NHL Picks action the Boston Bruins look to get back on track when they take on the Pittsburgh Penguins.  When the Penguins star, Sidney Crosby, went down to injury on January 18th much of the Pittsburgh faithful was ready to write off the season.  But that hasn’t happened as All-Star Evgeni Malkin is making life a bit easier without Sidney Crosby as he has eight goals and 12 assists in his last 10 games.  What was once a major concern has now turned into a memory as the Penguins are 6-2-2 since Crosby went down to improve their overall mark to 32-19-0-5 on the season.  In fact, Malkin scored a goal and had three assists in Pittsburgh’s win over Philadelphia this past Sunday.  Apparently the odds makers have caught up to the fact that life without Crosby is a bit alright as the Penguins are listed as a -165 favorite on the money line and +1.5/+170 on the puck line at Sportsbook.com.

The Boston Bruins come into this night of NHL Picks on a four game losing streak that dropped their overall record to 28-23-0-5.  The losing streak has knocked them out of the final playoff spot one point behind the Buffalo Sabres.  The Bruins have really struggled on offense as they rank only 22nd in the NHL scoring an average of 2.57 goals per game.  In the off season the Bruins focused on improving their goaltending and it appears that it has gotten more consistency out of the position as they rank 12th in the NHL giving up an average of 2.68 goals per game.  However, back on Tuesday, the Carolina Hurricanes scored the game's first three goals before Shawn Thornton netted two goals in the span of 27 seconds late in the gamet. The Bruins couldn't score again, and lost 3-2 to the Hurricanes.  Pittsburgh has won its last four meetings against Boston including a 5-4 win in Boston back on December 20.

Pittsburgh has been on a scoring spree and that could spell trouble for the Bruins tonight in NHL Picks as the Penguins are 10-1 ATS in home games after 3 or more consecutive overs over the last 2 seasons.  However, Pittsburgh also seems to let down after a divisional contest as they are only 1-6 ATS off a win against a division rival this season.
