NHL Picks: San Jose Sharks vs New York Islanders PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 18 February 2008

The New York Islanders come into this NHL Picks game hosting the San Jose Sharks struggling at 27-25-0-7 but have won 3 in a row after a long 7 game losing streak.  The most recent streak has them ranked 24th in total points thus far on the season.  New York went into this season with large turnover during the offseason. The Islanders have a whole new No. 1 line in Comrie, Guerin and Fedotenko and it has shown as they rank a lowly 27th in the NHL scoring only an average of 2.46 goals per game.  Last season for some reason the Islanders went out and signed goaltender Rick DiPietro  to an unbelievable15-year contract.  It hasn’t paid off on the defensive front as they rank only 21st in the league giving up 2.88 goals per game.  The Islanders are hoping to get off to a good start tonight as they have won only 22% of their games when they are trailing after the first period.  Apparently their current three game winning streak is not enough to instill confidence in the odds maker’s minds as the Islanders are listed as a +110 underdog on the money line and +1.5/-250 on the puck line at BetOnline.com

Unlike the Islanders, the San Jose Sharks roll into this game off a loss yesterday to the New York Rangers in NHL Picks action that was their third defeat in a row.  The current losing streak has dropped the Sharks to 31-18-0-8 on the season but still rank 9th in total points only 3 points behind the 3rd ranked Ottawa Senators.  Last season was the third 100 point season in a row for the Sharks but unless they get things on track soon that mark could be in jeopardy.  After having a potent offense last season they have faltered this year as they rank only 25th in scoring averaging an anemic 2.57 goals per game.  However, they are getting top notch play out of their defense and goaltending as they rank an impressive 3rd in the league giving up only 2.38 goals per game.  That should pay off tonight versus an Islanders offense that has had trouble scoring all season.T

he Islanders might just be what the doctors ordered for the San Jose Sharks as they are an impressive 22-5 ATS in road games when playing against a team with a losing record over the last 2 seasons while the New York Islanders are a bankroll busting 17-36 ATS in home games when playing against a team with a winning record over the last 3 seasons.
