NHL Picks: New York Rangers vs Montreal Canadians PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 19 February 2008

After a slow start the New York Rangers come into this game of NHL Picks in the middle of a two game wining streak and look to make it three in a row when they travel to take on the Montreal Canadians.  The Rangers come in 30-24-0-7 and sit 6th in the Eastern Conference playoff race.  The Rangers After a slow start the New York Rangers come into this defense seems to have gotten things on track as they have given up only 9 goals in their past five games.  Overall New York ranks and impressive 3rd in the NHL in defense giving up only an average of 2.38 goals per game.  If they hope to win this one as well as secure a better playoff position they will have to pick it up on offense.  They have really struggled in this facet of the game all season long as they rank a lowly 28th in the NHL scoring only an average of 2.43 goals per game.  The Rangers have had success versus the Canadians this season as they have defeated the Canadiens in each of their three previous meetings.  That doesn’t seem to have impressed the books as they rangers are listed as a +105 road underdog on the money line and +1.5/-250 at WagerWeb.com.

The Montreal Canadiens come into this one looking for their fourth consecutive win and the top spot in the Eastern Conference.  The Canadians are 32-19-0-9 and are currently tied with both New Jersey and Ottawa for the most points. Montreal is hoping to continue its weekend success that included a home and home series sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers.  Once the stalwart of the Canadians their defense hasn’t been all that effective as they rank in the middle of the pack at 15th overall.  It has been their offense that has carried them this season as they rank an impressive 4th in the league scoring an average of 3.05 goals per game.  Former Ranger, Alexi Kovalev, leads the club this season with 27 goals and 59 points.  Starting in goal tonight will be Carey Price who has improved his save percentage to 94.7% over his last four games from a previous 91%.

Although the Rangers seem to have the Canadians number this season before jumping onboard this small dog consider the fact that they are only 4-11 ATS in road games after playing a game where 4 or fewer total goals were scored this season.  However, that might not be a factor considering that Montreal is 1-6 ATS in home games playing with double revenge - 2 straight losses vs. opponent this season.
