The struggling Ottawa Senators try to get back into the NHL Picks win column as they travel cross country to take on the San Jose Sharks. After starting the season on an unbelievable 15-2 mark and holding on to the top spot of the Northeast Division until just recently come in into tonight’s contest really struggling. In fact, the Senators have lost 8 of their last 11 overall and have not strung together at least two wins in a row all the way back to February 9th. Their most recent loss was a 3-1 loss to Anaheim. Suddenly, the Ottawa Senators are struggling to string together victories. Due to their recent troubles the Senators decided to make a coaching change putting Bryan Murray behind the bench. Thus far it hasn’t seem to has paid off as Ottawa is only 1-2 in his first three games as coach. Another issue that could hurt their chances tonight is that captain Daniel Alfredsson might not play as he is nursing a back strain. The losing streak as certainly taken it’s toll with the Odds makers as the Senators are +135 road underdogs on the money line and +1.5/-235 on the puck line at WagerWeb.com
The San Jose Sharks on the other hand come into this NHL Picks game red hot and sporting an impressive six game winning streak. Their last win came back on Monday over the Montreal Canadians 6-4. In that game Jonathan Cheechoo notched his 15th goal in his last 22 games while Joe Thornton added two more. Cheechoo is currently tied with linemate Milan Michalek for the team lead in goals with 20 while Thornton, who has 59 assists this season, trails only Marc Savard of the Boston Bruins for the NHL lead. During their current winning streak both the San Jose defense and offense have performance well. Over the last five games the Sharks are averaging 3.4 goals per game while their defense has only given up an average of 1.8 per game. The Sharks have split the six contests at home versus the Senators at 3 and 3.
The lack of scoring for the Senators is certainly going to be an issue for their backers as Ottawa is only 1-7 ATS in road games after scoring 1 goal or less in their previous game this season. By contrast, San Jose’s scoring streak bodes well for them to continue their winning NHL Picks streak as they are 34-11 ATS after playing a game where 8 or more total goals were scored over the last 3 seasons.
