Let’s take a look at the top four teams to challenge for the 2009 Stanley Cup:

The Western Conference leading San Jose Sharks finished with an overall 53-18-11 record with a 32-5-8 home record, the best in the league. They’ve allowed 204 goals this season, the least amount in the league. They’ll host the eighth seed Anaheim Ducks in the first round; they lead the Ducks 4-2 this season matching them goal for goal at 12 apiece. The San Jose Sharks are listed as +250 moneyline favs to win the 2009 Stanley Cup.

The second seed Detroit Red Wings are always a favorite to win the Cup, considering they’ve won it four times in the last decade and they’re the reigning Stanley Cup winners.  They finished their season with an overall 51-21-10 record with a 24-12-5 road record, the best in the league. They also scored the most goals in the league with 295 goals. To win the Cup you have to win on the road. They’ll face the seventh seed Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round; their currently split with Columbus 3-3, they’ve outscored the Jackets 18-17. The Detroit Red Wings are listed as +250 moneyline favs to win the 2009 Stanley Cup.

The Eastern Conference leading Boston Bruins are the surprise team this year. They finished with an overall 53-19-10 record and the second best home record in the league. They also posted 274 goals, the second highest to Detroit. They finished with a 24-13-4 road record, the second best in the league next to Detroit. They’ll face the eighth seed Montreal Canadiens who eliminated them last year. The Bruins lead the Canadiens this season 5-1, where they outscored them 23-13. The Boston Bruins are listed at +450 to win the 2009 Stanley Cup.

The third seed New Jersey Devils have a good chance based on their superb goaltending from Martin Brodeur. The Devils finished with a 51-27-4 record, they had the third best home record and road record. They also allowed 209 goals, the second lowest in the league. They’ll face the sixth seed Carolina Hurricanes who have beaten them 3-1 this season outscoring them 11-8. But Martin Brodeur was out 25 games with an injury so not to worry. The New Jersey Devils are listed at +600 to win the 2009 Stanley Cup.
