Phoenix (8-5, 4-1 V) goalie Mike Smith allowed all four goals on 40 shots for the Coyotes, who are in the conference final round for the first time in franchise history. “Obviously being down 2-0 was not the results we were looking for at home. So we need to regroup tomorrow and go in there and try to steal a game on the road,” Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett said.
The tactical performance from the Kings has been solid, offense and defense, but it’s the way they are executing in those areas that stands out. Every attempt, whether it’s a shot on net or a loose puck battle in the neutral zone, is intended to challenge the Coyotes. “They’re a hard team to play against,” Mike Smith said. “Obviously they have some skilled players that play a hard game. Their defense takes care of their net very well, and obviously they have a great goaltender so they have a whole package that’s tough to penetrate.”
In addition to losing Game 2, Coyotes forward Martin Hanzal also was dealt a one-game suspension for boarding Los Angeles captain Dustin Brown in the third period.
LA (10-1, 3-1 H) earned a 4-0 win in Tuesday’s Game 2 in the desert. Jeff Carter stole the show by recording his first career playoff hat trick. Dwight King also scored for the Kings, who have outshot Phoenix by a whopping 88-51 margin over the first two games of this series. Jonathan Quick stopped 24 shots for his second shutout of the 2012 playoffs and hasn’t surrendered more than two goals since their loss to the Canucks in the first round.
The Coyotes have found some advantages difficult to overcome. The Kings, among the three youngest and heaviest rosters in the league, have used their young legs and big bodies to their advantage. The 240-pound Penner has re-emerged as a playoff force. Dwight King has four goals in his past four games. Fellow rookie Jordan Nolan also made his presence felt with six hits in less than 10 minutes of ice time in Game 2.
“We were a confident group coming in. We had to battle hard the last month of the season just to get in, pretty much playing playoff hockey all the way,” said Carter
The Bottom Line: The Coyotes don’t have much of a chance tonight. The Kings goalie is impenetrable, while the Yotoes are giving up lots of goals. Want to dominate the books this season with some of the best NHL Picks Experts in the business? Then sign up right now and get NHL Picks Free!
