NHL Picks: Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils

by Alexander Banks on Sunday, December 16th, 2007

Goaltender Martin Brodeur will look for his 10th win in 12 starts of NHL when the New Jersey Devils host the Philadelphia Flyers in a Sunday contest.  Brodeur has been spectacular and lost for the first time in regulation since Nov. 16 last night 4-1 to the Phoenix Coyotes. He had gone 10-0-1 before last night’s loss.  New Jersey comes into this contest 17-12-3 and has lost three of their last four games since a nine-game winning streak.  Much of the problem looks to be their power play as they were 0-for-4 last night and is just 3-for-27 in their past seven games. Their offense has struggled all season as well raking 24th in the NHL and scoring only 2.47 goals per game.  SBGglobal.com has the Devils as a favorite of -150 on the money line and -1.5/+180 on the puck line.

Philadelphia rolls into this game at 16-11-3 on the season after last night’s shootout loss to Carolina has now lost back to back games for the first time since Nov. 15th and 17th.  After having the worst record in the NHL last season the Flyers have yet to lose three in a row yet this season.  The Flyers power play seems to have come to life this season as they have scored a power play goal in four straight games and are converting 23.3 percent overall, one of the league's best success rates.  The Flyers strangely enough have the second fewest shots on goal in the NHL, but have scored on 11.9 percent of their shots which is the best percentage in the NHL and rank 4th in scoring at 3.17 goals per game.

If you like to play favorites than the Devils might be the way to go as they are an impressive 20-8 as a favorite over their last 28 games.  But before you blindly jump on the New Jersey bandwagon consider that the Flyers are Flyers are 4-1 in their last 5 games as a road underdog of +110 to +150.
