NHL Picks: Buffalo Sabres vs New York Islanders PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 19 December 2007

After a huge season of NHL Picks last year when the Sabres were the class of the Eastern Conference it has been a different story thus far this season but hope to remedy that when they face the New York Islander this evening.  The Sabres come into this one at 16-14-0-1 and rank only 22nd in total points.  It certainly hasn’t been their scoring that has been causing the problems this year as they are the 3rd ranked team in the NHL netting 3.19 goals per game.  Their defense has been an issue allowing 2.84 goals per game and rank 17th.  When Buffalo has had the opportunity to be on the power play they have taken advantage as they have scored on 20% of their chances putting them 7th in the NHL.  BetOnline.com seems to think that the Sabres should be able to dispatch of the Islanders as they are listed as a -130 favorite on the money line and -1.5/+210 on the puck line.

The New York Islanders come into this one struggling at 15-14-0-2 but have lost 9 of their last 13 games overall and ranked two slots lower than the Sabres in total points thus far on the season.  New York went into this season with large turnover during the offseason. The Islanders have a whole new No. 1 line in Comrie, Guerin and Fedotenko and it has shown early in the season as they rank next to last in the NHL (only the Rangers are lower) scoring only an average of 2.26 goals per game.  Last season for some reason the Islanders went out and signed goaltender Rick DiPietro was signed to an unbelievable15-year contract.  It hasn’t shown on the defensive front as they rank only 16th in the league giving up 2.77 goals per game.  The Islanders are hoping to get off to a good start tonight as they have won only 31% of their games when they are trailing after the first period.

Buffalo is currently on a three game winning streak and that should bolster Sabre action tonight as they are 16-6 ATS in road games after a 3 game unbeaten streak over the last 3 seasons.  However, even though the Islanders are struggling right now they have been tough at home and are a perfect 6-0 ATS in home games after playing 2 consecutive home games this season.
