NHL Picks: Philadelphia Flyers vs Buffalo Sabres

by Alexander Banks on Friday, December 21st, 2007

The Buffalo Sabres host the Philadelphia Flyers in successive nights of a back to back home series of NHL Picks tonight.  The Sabres come into this one red hot recently having won their last four in a row and five of six.  Buffalo has yet to find the consistency that they had has season as they have been hot and cold all year that has produced a mediocre 17-14-0-1 mark and rank only 18th in total points.  After being dominating at home last year they are only 10-6 SU this season.  The Buffalo power play has been adequate as they currently rank 10th in the NHL  It will be important for Buffalo to grab the lead after two periods as thus far this season they have won 92% of their games when going into the third period ahead on the scoreboard.  Apparently the winning streak has put Buffalo in a positive light as they are listed as a solid favorite of -145 on the money line and -1.5/+180 on the puck line at BetUS.com scoring on 19.2% of their chances.

The Philadelphia Flyers had a disastrous year last season and as a result completed a total overhaul of the team.  They were very busy in the offseason as they acquired the rights to defenseman Kimmo Timonen and left wing Scott Hartnell from the Nashville Predators for a 2007 first-round pick; signed center Daniel Briere, who had been with the Buffalo Sabres, to an eight-year contract; acquired defenseman Jason Smith and right wing Joffrey Lupul from the Edmonton Oilers.  Thus far it seems to have paid off a bit as last season they won a total of 22 games and thus far this season they are 16-13-0-3.  However, they are mired in a current 4 game losing streak coming into this one.  The Flyers haven’t had problems scoring this season as they rank an impressive 5th in the league.

The current losing streak might be a good thing for bettors tonight as the Flyers are 8-2 ATS in road games after a game where they failed to cover the spread this season.  However, they have had problems over the past few seasons versus teams who pass the puck well as they are only 40-72 ATS versus teams averaging 5 or more assists per game over the last 3 seasons.
