The entire field is not set for the 137th Run for the Roses, but some early favorites have emerged in the prep races leading up to next month's big event. Among those already slated for a Kentucky Derby appearance are Uncle Mo, Dialed In, Soldat, and Pants on Fire. Early 2011 Kentucky Derby Odds have Uncle Mo pegged as the most likley winner come May 7th with the Todd Pletcher trained colt presently listed at +350 moneyline odds.
Uncle Mo, a three year old bay colt, has already racked up over 1.2 million in earnings, a total that leads all other potential
Derby contenders. Mo has participated in five races, three of which were Grade l affairs, earning four wins and one show.
Uncle Mo broke his maiden in August of last year and followed that victory up with wins at the one mile Champagne Stakes (October – Belmont Park) and the 1 1/16 mile Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs (November).
Uncle Mo, a product of Indian Charlie and Playa Maya, recorded his fourth win at Gulfstream Park in the one mile Timely Writer Stakes in March. His latest run came at the 1 1/8 mile, Grade l Wood Memorial Stakes on April 9th where, as a 1/10 favorite, he was bested by Toby's Corner and Arthur's Tale.
Mo's lackluster turn at the Wood Memorial was shocking, raising concerns among those in the know that the colt may not be capable of pulling off a Derby win.
Dialed In (+400), who is trained by two time Derby winner Nick Zito (Strike the Gold, Go For Gin), is 3-1-0 in four career races. The Mineshift sired colt took first in his most recent run, the Grade l Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park on April 3rd. His performance there, coupled with Uncle Mo's poor showing last Saturday, has many handicappers favoring a Dailed In Kentucky Derby victory.
