Backtalk 2010 Kentucky Derby Odds: 3-year-old Backtalk is looking to follow in his famous father’s footsteps at the 2010 Kentucky Derby on May 1st. Backtalk is the son of 2004 Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones. Online racebook BODOG.com had listed Backtalk 50 to 1 odds to win the 2010 Kentucky Derby.
Backtalk is one of the most highly regarded 2-year-olds in the country in 2009. Backtalk won both the Grade III Bashford Manor and Grade II Sanford last summer at Saratoga. Backtalk finished his final Derby work last week in Illinois. "I've never seen anything like it," said Billy Pettingill, who has worked as a Fair Grounds clocker in Illinois for more than 25 years. "I thought there was something wrong with my watch. The only thing I had anywhere near that was a horse called Apprentice for Billy Badgett, who worked in 1:10 flat."
Thoroughbred trainer Tom Amoss was skeptical if Backtalk has what it takes to make it to the Derby before his last race. He said, “'That's the question that's out there. This is going to tell us on Saturday. There's a lot of things we like. Not only is he the son of a Kentucky Derby winner, but the mare that he's out of (Apasionata, a daughter of Affirmed) was also a distance runner. But he's still going to have to prove it.'' It seems Backtalk has proved himself and is on his way to the May 1st Kentucky Derby.
