Kentucky Derby contender Noble's Promise trainer Ken McPeek said Tuesday the horse is "maybe 50-50" to make the Kentucky Derby field. The three year old survived a stumble while running in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby last weekend and sustained a few cuts and scrapes in his fifth place finish. The colt has also been diagnosed with a lung infection, causing more doubt regarding his entry status. Nobles Promise is second in graded earnings at $738,000, second only to Lookin' At Lucky.
Noble's Promise, who was one of the favorites to win the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn at 8-to-5 odds is currently listed on the Bodog.com Kentucky Derby futures board at 15-to-1 to win. The son of Cuvee is 3-3-1 in eight starts.
Prior to running in the Grade-2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn, Noble's Promise had no history on dirt. It seemed he answered any doubts in that race by finishing a close second to Lookin'At Lucky. Noble's Promise led most of the 1 1/16 mile Rebel but faded in the final stretch and nipped by a head.
Owned by Chasing Dreams LLC., the son of Cuvee, Noble's Promise is doing better, according to sources, and is heading to Churchill Downs.
A winner of the Grade-1 Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity at 2, he was also third in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Grade 1 and second behind Lookin At Lucky in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity. In his only other start at 3 he was second, beaten a head, in Oaklawn’s Grade-2 Rebel Stakes March 13.
