American Lion 2010 Kentucky Derby Odds: American Lion is one of four WinStar-owned colts, all graded stakes winners, being pointed to the $2 million 2010 Kentucky Derby to be run at Churchill Downs on May 1. American Lion, Rule, Super Saver, and Endorsement have been on the Kentucky Derby path since each one recorded a graded stakes win over a three-week period late last year. Online racebook BODOG.com had listed American Lion 18 to 1 odds to win the 2010 Kentucky Derby.
In addition to the Illinois Derby, American Lion also won the Hollywood Prevue S. last fall. American Lion was recently clocked at Keenland. He drilled a half-mile in :46 4/5. With jockey James Graham up, American Lion broke off at the 4 1/2-furlong pole and reeled off fractions of :11 3/5, :22 4/5, :34 3/5 and out five furlongs in 1:00 2/5. The move was the best of 15 at the distance according the Keenland clockers.
Trainer Eoin Harty said, “He worked good. He went a little faster than expected, but he did it so easily.”
WinStar’s Vice President Elliott Walden commented on the four horses that are expected to race in the Kentucky Derby. He said, “We just feel blessed to have them. It’s not something where we’re running horses just to run them. Fortunately, they’ve been able to prove themselves, and I can’t really separate them. I’ve had people ask me who I like the best, and I can’t really pick one. If I had to pull out one, I wouldn’t know which one to pull out. … The four that we have are in that second group that has a legitimate chance and a lot times ends up coming up and winning the race.”
