Caracortado 2010 Kentucky Derby Odds: California bred Caracortado just began his racing career last year. Caracortado, whose name means “Scarface” in Spanish, earned a total of $199,200 so far throughout his career. Online racebook BODOG.com had listed Caracortado 50 to 1 odds to win the 2010 Kentucky Derby.
Caracortado began his racing at Fairplex and won a $40,000 maiden claimer. He earned his way into the 1 1/16-mile Robert Lewis thanks to a game victory in the California Breeders’ Champion Stakes. Caracortado emerged as a Kentucky Derby contender with a victory over highly touted colts Tiz Chrome and American Lion in the $150,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita.
The horse is the son of Cat Dreams, out of the Maria’s Mon mare Moon’s Venus. Mike Machowsky trains the horse and Paul Atkinson rides him. "I wouldn't switch horses, even if I were asked," he says, "and I wouldn't be." He added, “I think about the Kentucky Derby. You can’t help but think about something like that. If it’s meant to be, it will work out. If not, I’m not going to be too disappointed. So far, things have been going great and that’s what I’ve been focusing on.”
Atkinson has been assured by Caracotado’s owners and Machosky that he will be in the saddle May 1 at Churchill Downs for the 2010 Kentucky Derby. “I’m a firm believer that loyalty means something,” said Machowsky, who owns the horse with Don Blahut. “Paul had ridden him flawlessly every time, and he’s been around long enough not to panic. I’m confident in him.”
